ASEAN FMs endorse framework of code of conduct in South China Sea
The framework of a code of conduct (COC) in the South China Sea was endorsed by ASEAN member countries’ foreign ministers on Saturday, Xinhua News Agency reported citing a spokesman for the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.
The framework is expected to be adopted at the ASEAN-China meeting on Sunday.
The COC aims to prevent conflicting territorial claims in the South China Sea from slipping into violent confrontations.
The new COC framework demonstrates the aspirations of China and the ASEAN bloc to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea and creates a favorable atmosphere for cooperation, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang on Thursday.
